Tips for a Healthier Canola Harvest
Aug 31, 2018
When you’re out in the field swathing and combining, missed weeds from your in-season spray program can add even more stress to an already stressful time of year.
If left unchecked, weeds such as wild buckwheat and cleavers can significantly slow your harvest and reduce the quality of your crop.1 The presence of too much green weed material can force you to delay harvest, and a large amount of weed seed in your production could result in dockages at the elevator.
The presence of weeds at harvest time is often a side-effect of insufficient weed control from earlier in the season, which unfortunately, is often due to bad weather. When rain keeps you out of the field, you run the risk of missing your chance to control difficult weeds. While weather is one of the many elements of farming that’s out of your control, it doesn’t mean you’re out of options.
Because now, there’s a solution on the horizon: TruFlex™ canola with Roundup Ready® Technology*.
Our new canola trait system will help fight harder-to-kill weeds like cleavers, foxtail barley and wild buckwheat, and can help you achieve season-long dandelion control. On top of that, it will also control 24 more weed species than Genuity® Roundup Ready® canola, including yellow foxtail, biennial wormwood and common milkweed.
Throughout the research and development phase of TruFlex™ canola, we conducted a series of field trials. These were done to test potential crop injury from spraying glyphosate at application rates above the recommended rates and outside the application window on Genuity® Roundup Ready® canola. These trials showed that spraying canola above the recommended rates or outside the application window could cost farmers three bushels per acre or more in yield.2
To address this, we wanted to ensure that our new canola trait system would give farmers a more flexible application window, which could save them time and money. The window of application is now 10 to 14 days longer than our current technology. When applying sequential rates of 0.67 L/ac of Roundup WeatherMAX® herbicide, you can now apply past the six-leaf stage all the way to first flower. This gives you more time to control weeds—especially if bad weather delays your plans—which, in turn, can help you achieve a higher yield potential.
New advances in trait technology have made it possible for TruFlex™ canola to have better weed control, crop safety and a minimized yield penalty when compared to Genuity® Roundup Ready® canola. TruFlex™ canola is built on new genetics to deliver higher yield potential compared to our current technology. This elite germplasm has been bred to deliver products with agronomic benefits that Canada’s canola farmers rely on.
*TruFlex™ canola with Roundup Ready® Technology is not yet available for commercial sale or commercial planting. Current plans are to commercialize for the 2019 growing season.
