From the spark of the big idea to a new Genuity® product's first day on the market, each phase of innovation brings us one step closer to helping you make the most out of each and every acre. Monsanto invests more than $3 million a day to discover and deliver new technologies. As a result, Genuity® products are providing increased yields, unsurpassed insect protection and herbicide tolerance, season after season.

Discovery

Gene/Trait Identification

High-throughput screening and model crop testing.

Phase 1

Proof of Concept

The first Phase of Innovation focuses on gene optimization and crop transformation. At any one time, thousands of product candidates are in this phase.

Phase 2

Early Development

Genuity® Trait product candidates that achieve gene optimization move on to Phase 2. At this stage, Monsanto researchers focus on developing traits, collecting data and making large-scale transformations.

Phase 3

Advanced Development

In the third phase of innovation, product candidates undergo trait integration, field testing and regulatory data generation. Traits are typically in Phase 3 for 12 to 24 months.

Phase 4

Pre-launch

In this final phase, product candidates are submitted for regulatory approvals, followed by seed bulk-up and marketing preparations for commercialization. The success rate for new products at this stage is 90%.

Market Launch

Over the past 13 years, our trait pipeline has produced 18 commercial products, including both first-and-second generation technologies. A recent launch includes Genuity® Roundup Ready 2 Yield® Soybeans.
